Breathing Lanzarote Part II

Continuamos nuestro viaje y nos dirigimos a los Jameos del Agua. De camino nos cruzamos con este gran barco abandonado que haría las delicias de cualquier buzo o explorador. La de historias que debe albergar…estaba muy cerca de la orilla y aunque en la foto no se aprecia era enorme.

Los Jameos deben su nombre a la existencia de un lago interior natural originado por filtración y se originaron tras la erupción del Volcán de la Corona. Llama la atención la transparencia y claridad del agua donde habitan los cangrejos ciegos (también conocidos como “jameitos” o “jameos”), especie única en el mundo. Hay tres jameos: “Jameo Chico”, “Jameo Grande” y “Jameo Redondo”. Inaugurados en el año 1966, esta obra del escultor, pintor, arquitecto y artista César Manrique es un claro ejemplo de como integrar arquitectura y naturaleza. Una vez que entras te sumerges en un entorno único, en el que hasta el canto de los pájaros está en armonía con las paredes, los cactus, el murmullo de la gente, el mobiliario, la delicada música de fondo, el lago descansando al final de las escaleras…pura magia.

We continued our journey and headed to Jameos del Agua. On our way we spotted this abandoned ship that would be a great attraction for any diver or explorer. I´m sure that has an amazing story behind … it was very close to the shore and it is was huge although it can´t be appreciated in the picture.

The Jameos owes their name to the existence of a natural interior lake originated by water filtration after the eruption of Volcan de la Corona. The transparency and clarity of the water draws attention, where blind albino cave crabs are its inhabitants and are a unique species in the world. There are three Jameos: “Jameo Chico”, “Jameo Grande” and “Jameo Redondo”. Inaugurated in 1966, this work by the sculptor, painter, architect and artist César Manrique is a clear example of how to integrate architecture and nature. Once you enter here you immerse yourself in a unique setting, where even the birdsongs are in harmony with the walls, the cactus, people whispering, the furniture, the delicate background music, the lake resting at the bottom of the stairs…it was pure magic.

Después nos dirigimos hacia la Cueva de los Verdes. Se trata de una inmersión en toda regla en las entrañas de la tierra. Fue una visita espectacular y única. Nos contaron un secreto a la salida y nos hicieron prometer no decir nada, así que poco más os puedo decir. Os dejo con la intriga para que podáis comprobarlo vosotros mismos si visitáis la isla. No os arrepentiréis.

Ya cayendo la tarde, visitamos otra de las obras del artista de proyección internacional César Manrique inaugurada en el año 1973, el Mirador del río. Merece la pena tomarse un café y admirar las vistas. Nosotros tuvimos suerte que fuimos a última hora y casi no había nadie. Ubicado en lo alto del Risco de Famara, a 475 metros de altitud y desde donde se pueden apreciar una de las vistas más espectaculares de la isla. Personalmente, a mi la arquitectura y decoración con parámetros modernistas me recordaron a los escondites de los villanos de una película de James Bond.

Afterwards, we headed towards Cueva de los Verdes. It is a full immersion in the bowels of the earth. It was a spectacular and unique visit, highly recommended. The guide shared with us its secret and he made us promise not to say anything,I can tell you so little else about this attraction. I leave you with the uncertainty so that you can check it by yourself if you are planning on visiting the island. You will not regret it.

Just before sundown, we visited another work of the artist César Manrique inaugurated in the year 1973, el Mirador del río. It is worth having a coffee and admiring the views. We were lucky that we went late in the day and there was hardly anyone there. Located at the top of Risco de Famara, at 475 meters in altitude and from where you can appreciate one of the most spectacular views of the island. Personally, to me the architecture and decoration with modernist parameters reminded me of a villain hideout from a 007 film.

Nuestro viaje termina con la visita de Jardín de Cactus. Visita obligadas para todos aquellos amantes de cactus y suculentas. Una vez más César Manrique integra arquitectura y paisaje manteniendo el tandem inalterable de arte y naturaleza que se aprecia en todas y cada una de sus intervenciones.

Our trip ends with the visit of Jardín de Cactus. This attraction is a must visit for all those cactus and succulent´s lovers. Once again César Manrique integrates architecture and landscape maintaining the unalterable tandem of art and nature that is appreciated in each and every one of his interventions.
